A Passion for Health

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Yesterday was a busy, busy day for me. My day started at 5 a.m. and did not end until 8 p.m. I spent the morning and afternoon in Washington, DC attending client meetings. When I got home, I was greeted by a surprise visitor. Sometimes life gets in the way of blogging, but I’m okay with that.

Especially if the day was full of good food and fun. Which was the case yesterday. My boss and I arrived in DC bright and early, we had breakfast on the train but by noon we were ravenous. Fortunately the DC team had lunch waiting. We ordered from Mixt Greens, is an Eco-Gourmet® restaurant that serves environmentally responsible food. All of the food is organic, local and sustainable and most importantly it was delicious. Honestly, my lunch was one of the best salads I’ve ever tasted.

The Siam Salad included mixt greens, green papaya, jicama, mango, cucumber, red pepper, fresh herbs, spicy peanuts and served with a thai lemongrass vinaigrette.  I’m cynical when restaurants claim to be organic but the freshness of these ingredients made me a believer.

The agenda for the rest of the day was to catch an early train back to NYC and hit up the gym and Core Fusion. Unfortunately Amtrak was not in on the plan and held me up in Wilmington. We sat on the tracks for 20 minutes and then had to pull back. In total, we added 45 minutes to the commute. Needless to say I was extra tired and way behind schedule when I got into the city.

When I walked through the door I was still hoping to workout, but was surprised by a visit from an old friend of Jeff’s. All my plans went out the window with Javier’s arrival. He was only in town for the night from Miami so as much as I wanted to work out I knew I wouldn’t have the chance to see him again for a while. Plus Jeff wouldn’t let me out of this one. Which was fine by me.

We took Javier out to one of our favorite places, Maxie’s Grill. Even though I had a huge salad for lunch, I couldn’t resist the greens at dinner. This time I order the Ahi Tuna Salad and it was quite good, but surprisingly didn’t compare to my lunch. My mouth is still-watering over that meal.

During dinner, I learned that Javier is in a very similar situation as health-wise. He was recently diagnoses with high cholesterol and is making major changes to his diet. We talked about everything from exercise, to veganism and raw food. It was great conversation – I love hearing other peoples take on health.

Javier was so knowledgeable and it was definitely refreshing to hear someone have such a passion about health. We could have talked all night, but I was whooped. I’m sad my friend is leaving today but very happy that he shared his experience with Jeff and I. I think it had a great impact on Jeff and may even help him consider his food choices more closely.

Do you have friends outside of the blog-world who share your passion for health? Are you ever surprised by other’s take on health eating?
