While in LA this past weekend, I had the pleasure of checking out some of the best food spots the city has to offer. And one café particularly stands out – Huckleberry’s.
Huckleberry Bakery and Café is owned and operated by husband and wife team Zoe Nathan and Josh Loeb. Zoe has worked at Tartine Bakery in San Francisco and at Lupa in NYC and is in charge of all of the food, while Josh, who opened Rustic Canyon Wine Bar and Seasonal Kitchen, oversees the operations of the bakery and café.
Everything served at Huckleberry is made on site using the best quality ingredients, including organic flour and farmer’s market produce. The menu changes regularly with the seasons and on the baker’s whims. In fact, the menu is entirely on chalkboard. I love that look.
Everything on the menu sounded delicious. In usual fashion, I spent a good 10 minutes agonizing over what to order. They have an amazing array of salads, pastries and main dishes. You can order a trio of salads as your entrée too. I finally settled on Poached Eggs over fresh market vegetables. And I’m so glad I did!
I’ve mentioned before my love of poached eggs, but these poached eggs will forever be the best I’ve ever had. Once the yolks broke this became the messiest breakfast bowl ever, but that didn’t matter once the flavors came together. The combination of pesto, perfectly poached eggs and sautéed snow peas, greens and tomatoes was incredible. Light, but at the same time filling. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.
Jeff’s entrée was equally as good. He had the House Made Niman Ranch Roast Beef Sandwich which came with garlic aioli, arugula & parmesan on ciabatta. Another flavor explosion. Arugula always is though. Its so peppery.
I’m definitely going to attempt to recreate these poached eggs at home, such an unusual combination but it seems like it would be simple to recreate.
We had tons of other goodies there that I didn’t snap, including a white bean dip with the best crusty sourdough bread, a carrot salad and a prosciutto croissant. Everything I tasted was perfection and extremely fresh. You could tell that the ingredients used were the best quality. If you’re ever in LA I highly recommend you check out Huckleberry for breakfast, brunch or lunch.
