If you’ve been following Miss Chubby Hubby for sometime, you probably remember when I ate nothing but bagels for breakfast. I’ve definitely expanded into new and more nutritionally satisfying meals since, but sometimes there is nothing I want more then a dense, chewy, NYC bagel. When a serious craving strikes, I think its best not to avoid it.
This morning I found myself with the most intense bagel craving every (yes it’s that time of the month). I tried to pack something healthy, I really did. But I just couldn’t bring myself to eat yogurt, oats, protein pancakes or anything else. It had to be a bagel. So I stopped at my local bagel shop and picked up my favorite selection – a whole wheat bagel (not toasted) with a schmear of cinnamon raisin cream cheese.
It was glorious.
My only complaint? The pound of cream cheese that was plopped not schmeared on.
Seriously, who can eat that much cream cheese in one sitting? It’s no wonder Americans have such a messed up view of actual portions.
Besides the cream cheese mishap, this breakfast was perfect. Sometimes I just have to have a bagel.
But now onto why I needed that bagel. At first I thought it was the obvious reason (mentioned above). But then it dawned on my, my recent meal choices and workout routine could be what’s driving this craving. In the past 3 days, I’ve run 18 miles, plus I’ve been doing light weight training. For me, this is a pretty heavy routine. Not only have I been running a lot, two of these workout incorporate HIIT training. In terms of diet, my meals have been light on fat and protein and centered on whole grains and veggies. Even though whole grains are great, sometimes the more carbs you eat, the more carbs you crave.
Now I’m not concerned about one bagel craving, but looking back over my recent meals and workouts makes me realize I need a little more variety to keep everything in balance. Because to me, that’s the most important part of holistic health – balance.
Do you ever have intense cravings for specific foods? Any tips for balancing it all out?
